A plain-language guide to the specialist driver jobs you see in Gulf ads, what each involves and how to qualify.
Gulf job ads are full of specialist driver titles. Each one needs different skills, and most pay more than a standard light driver job. Here's what they mean.
HIAB driver
A HIAB is a truck with a hydraulic loading crane mounted behind the cab. The driver drives to the site and uses the crane to load and unload materials such as pipes, blocks or containers. You need a heavy licence, and employers prefer drivers with crane experience or a crane operator certificate. Safety around overhead lines and stable ground is critical.
Transit mixer driver
A transit mixer is a concrete mixer truck. The driver collects ready-mix concrete from the plant and delivers it to construction sites while the drum keeps turning. Timing matters, because concrete must be poured before it sets. You need a heavy licence. Construction booms in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Oman keep demand high.
Tanker driver
Tanker drivers carry fuel, water, chemicals or gas. Fuel and chemical tankers usually need extra hazardous-goods training, and they pay among the highest truck salaries. Water tanker jobs are common in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Trailer driver
Trailer (articulated truck or "18-wheeler") drivers do long-distance and port haulage. Reversing and coupling skills are essential, and you'll often need a heavy or trailer licence class. Long-haul jobs usually add trip allowances.
Push back driver (airport)
At airports, push back drivers operate the tug that pushes aircraft back from the gate. It's precise, safety-critical work done with the ground crew and the pilots. Employers usually want airport ground support experience and an airside ID or GSE card. They train new hires on the specific equipment.
School bus driver
School bus drivers carry children between home and school. You need a bus licence, a clean record and patience. In the UAE, companies often pay for the UAE bus licence and raise the salary once you pass.
Buggy driver
Buggy drivers move staff, guests or equipment around large sites such as resorts, campuses, events, airports and new city projects. A light licence is usually enough.
How to move up
- Get your heavy licence early. See the Saudi heavy licence guide.
- Keep experience letters that name the vehicle type (for example "HIAB 10-ton").
- Take safety courses when your employer offers them.

Common questions
Which specialist driver job pays the most?
Fuel and chemical tanker drivers and some crane-truck drivers usually earn the most, because of the extra risk and training.
Do I need a separate crane certificate for HIAB work?
Many employers ask for one, or for proven experience. Some train you on the job. Check the ad.
Is airport work open to new drivers?
Usually employers want ground support experience, but some train new hires. Airside security clearance is required.
Can I move from light to heavy driving in the Gulf?
Yes. Many drivers start light, then their company sponsors a heavy licence. Ask about this in interviews.
