What Kuwait's domestic worker law guarantees house drivers, typical pay, and how to complain if things go wrong.
House drivers in Kuwait are covered by the Domestic Workers Law (Law 68 of 2015), not the private sector labour law. It gives you specific rights. Know them before you sign.
Salary
- The legal minimum for domestic workers is KD 75 a month.
- House drivers are usually paid more than the minimum. Advertised offers are commonly around KD 100–160, with drivers who already have Gulf experience at the higher end.
- Food and accommodation are normally provided by the family.
Working hours and rest
- A maximum of 12 hours of work a day, with rest breaks.
- At least one full day off each week.
Leave and end of service
- 30 days of paid annual leave after one year.
- End-of-service pay of one month's salary for each year of service.
- Either side should give notice before the end of the contract if they don't want to renew.
Medical care
The employer is responsible for your medical treatment while you work for them.
Your contract
Your contract should be on the official Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) domestic worker form, in Arabic and English. Read it carefully: check the salary, the day off and who pays for the ticket home. Keep a copy.
If something goes wrong
Complaints go to PAM's Domestic Labour Department free of charge. Cases that aren't solved there go to the labour court, also without court fees. You can also contact your embassy's labour section.

Common questions
Can the family keep my passport?
Your passport belongs to you. If it's being held against your will, ask PAM or your embassy for help.
What if I'm asked to work for another family?
Your contract is with your sponsor. Working for someone else without a legal transfer can cause problems with your residence, so ask PAM first.
Do I get a ticket home?
Contracts usually cover a return ticket at the end of the contract. Check your contract's wording before you sign.
Can I transfer to a company driver job?
Transfers between domestic and private sector visas are restricted and change often. Check the current rules with PAM before you plan a move.
