The full process for a Qatar driving licence: NOC, eye test, driving school, the 40-question theory test, and light and heavy vehicle fees.
Qatar has steady demand for company drivers, house drivers, bus drivers and heavy drivers. To work as any of them you need a Qatar driving licence. Here's how expats get one.
Who can exchange directly?
Holders of a valid GCC licence don't need the full procedure. Holders of licences from a list of about 30 countries (including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore and many European countries) may also exchange directly. Drivers from South Asia, Africa and the Philippines usually take the full driving school route. The list has been disputed and changes, so confirm with the Traffic Department before you plan.
Minimum age
- 18 for light vehicles
- 21 for heavy vehicles
Step-by-step: the full route
- Get an NOC from your employer. Your sponsor issues a no-objection certificate through the Metrash app (Traffic → License Service → License NOC).
- Eye test. At an approved centre; around QAR 25–50.
- Choose a driving school. All schools follow the Ministry of Interior curriculum. Experienced drivers may get a shortened course with Traffic Department approval.
- Theory test. 40 questions; you need 37 correct to pass. Study the signs carefully.
- Practical lessons focusing on the "P" (parking) and "L" manoeuvres.
- Road test and parking test with a traffic officer, often on the same day.
- Pay and collect your licence at the Traffic Department.
Licence fees for expats
- Light vehicle: QAR 250, valid 5 years
- Heavy vehicle: QAR 300, valid 5 years
- Motorcycle: QAR 150, valid 5 years
- Learner permit: QAR 150, valid 3 months
Driving school fees are separate. They depend on the school and course length.
Manual or automatic?
Passing on a manual car lets you drive both manual and automatic. Passing on an automatic limits you to automatic. Company and heavy jobs often use manual vehicles, so a manual pass is worth it.
Is your profession eligible?
Qatar links licence eligibility to the profession on your residence permit, and some professions are not eligible. If you're hired as a driver this isn't a problem, but if your QID shows another job title, check before you apply.

Common questions
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on your experience and the school's assessment. Experienced drivers may be allowed a shorter course after approval from the Traffic Department.
Can I take the theory test in my language?
The theory test is offered in several languages. Ask your driving school which ones are available when you register.
What if I fail the road test?
You can rebook after more practice. Each retest has a fee, so practise parking and the L and P manoeuvres until you're confident.
Do I need a new licence if I change employers?
No. Your licence stays valid until it expires, as long as your residence is valid.
Procedures and fees can change. Confirm with the Ministry of Interior or through Metrash before applying.
