Direct conversion vs the full driving school route in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with costs, documents and tips for professional drivers.
The UAE has some of the best-paid driver jobs in the Gulf, but almost every one needs a UAE driving licence. Ads often say "only UAE licence holders apply". This guide explains the two ways to get one and what each costs.
Route 1: Direct conversion
If your licence comes from an eligible country, you can swap it for a UAE licence without lessons or tests. Eligible countries include all GCC states, the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, Turkey and most European countries. The list is reviewed regularly, so check the current version with the RTA (Dubai) or the licensing authority in your emirate.
You'll need:
- A UAE residence visa and Emirates ID (tourists can't convert)
- Your original licence, valid or only recently expired
- A legal Arabic translation if the licence isn't in English or Arabic
- An eye test from an approved optician (around AED 100–150)
- Your passport
Total cost for conversion is commonly reported at about AED 1,000–1,500, and the licence is often printed the same day.
Important: only the class you already hold converts. If your home licence is light only, you'll get a light licence. Heavy vehicle and bus classes may still need UAE training and tests.
Route 2: Driving school
Licences from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and many African countries generally can't be converted directly. You'll open a file with an approved driving school, then complete:
- Theory classes and a theory test
- Practical lessons
- An internal assessment and a parking test
- A final road test with an examiner
This route is expensive and slow for a new learner: often AED 6,000–10,000 and several months. Experienced drivers sometimes qualify for shortened packages at certain schools, so ask the school about options for holders of a home licence.
Who pays?
For company, bus and heavy driver jobs, many UAE employers pay for the licence. School bus and transport companies sometimes hire drivers on a lower salary until they pass the UAE test, then raise pay. Our listing for school bus drivers is an example. Always ask:
- Who pays the school fees?
- Will fees be deducted from my salary if I fail or leave?
- What's my salary before and after I get the licence?
Automatic vs manual
If you pass on an automatic car, your licence is automatic only. Many delivery vans and trucks are manual, so a manual licence gives you more job options.

Common questions
Is a licence from one emirate valid in all of the UAE?
Yes. A UAE licence issued in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or another emirate is valid across the whole country.
How long is a UAE licence valid?
For residents it is commonly issued for several years and renewed with a new eye test. The exact period depends on your age and the emirate.
Can I take the test in a language other than English or Arabic?
Theory tests are offered in several languages, including Urdu, Hindi and others in some emirates. Ask your driving school which languages are available.
Will a driving school accept me before I have a job?
You need a UAE residence visa to open a file. Most drivers start the licence process after arriving on an employment visa.
Fees and eligible-country lists change. Confirm with the RTA or your emirate's licensing authority before you pay.
